Call for Speakers: RE BarCamp Phoenix 2009

RE BarCamp Phoenix 2009 is less than 4 days away. We went by Scottsdale Stadium today and made preparations for exactly how we’ll use the available space for the various sessions. What we’ll have is the team shop, which can handle 200 people, the press box which can handle 50 people, then 2 smaller rooms that can each handle 25 people. On top of that, we have an awesome networking area with 5 rooms that will handle 5-10 people each, for those smaller more intimate sessions. Outside those rooms is a large foyer for general networking between sessions, that 50+ folks can mingle in. Couple that with all of the various patio spaces (it could be hot in the afternoon, so we aren’t relying on them), and there should be plenty of space to accommodate the 250 people we expect in attendance, plus some wiggle room.
The team shop and one of the 25 person rooms will both have projectors, however right now we do not have a wifi solution. It seems Qwest has decided to stop returning phone calls. If anyone has a connection at Qwest that will encourage them to call us back, have them call Jay. It’s not critical, but it would be nice.
This leads us to today’s call to action: If you are planning to lead a session, please leave a comment here with what you plan to talk about. When we announced BarCamp, Jay requested this as well, but now that it’s closer, for those that may have been on the fence about presenting, please chime in now. We’ll be formalizing the majority of the session leaders Thursday morning at 9:30am, but any pre-work we can get done now will help us plan the space, as it is a little spread out, and we recognize the need to “map it out” so to speak.
As a guide, here’s what we’d like to see in your comment:
Presenters Name
Session Title
Description of Session
Do you need a projector?
If you won’t be there all day, please let us know when you can present.
If you cannot be there at 9:30am, when we set the day’s agenda, it’s important we know about your session in advance, so we can slot you in accordingly.
Likewise, if you are attending, and you’d like to hear someone lead a session on a specific topic, please post a comment with what you want to hear about. Again, Jay asked for this back on February 20. If you commented on that post, thank you! You don’t need to comment again.

Engaging customers online
Why comment marketing and blogging can get you more customers, improve your rep and help your SEO.
I’d like to present after noon if possible, but I’ll be there all day. I’ll need something to write on, like a dry erase board. Projector if possible, but not required.
Kelley Koehler on Mon, 20th Apr 2009 3:55 pm
Presenter: myself. howdy.
Session Title: i suck at titles. stop drowning in useless numbers?
here’s what’s on my mind: there’s a lot of anxiety and concern about website “hits” and other meaningless things people brag about. if your site analytics aren’t delivering meaningful data where you can make confident decisions about how to improve your user’s experience and therefore your business, then you need to make some changes. so i wanted to discuss how one might better understand your site numbers – what it means about your users – so we can learn to be in that place where data drives meaningful action.
Do you need a projector – nope.
and i’ll be there all day. see you guys there!

Do you need a projector? No.
Since it’s an interactive session, I would like to present in the morning when everyone has lots of energy and are not overloaded with valuable info.

Do you need a projector? No.
I would also like to present in the morning!

Some thoughts, depending on interest…
And I prefer “facilitator” over “presenter” as it’s much more in line with the spirit of bar camp.
Facilitator: Jay Thompson
Session Title: Screw SEO, it’s all about YEO
Description of Session: YEO = You Engaging Others (shamelessly stolen from Jeff Turner aka @respres). Sure SEO is important, but I’d trade 1,000 website visits a month for 5 new clients. Engage and they will come.
Do you need a projector? Nope
Faciliator: Jay Thompson
Session Title: Blogging 101
Description of Session: The in’s and out’s of blogging for business. Beginning steps, what to do and not to do. And what to expect.
Do you need a projector? Nope
I’ll be there all day.
Jay Thompson on Mon, 20th Apr 2009 11:40 pm
I’d just like to chime in a bit….
Bar Camp is about participation. Everyone there is a “speaker” and “presenter”. I’m begging those leading sessions to involve all the participants. That’s what bar camps are all about.
There are a bazillion conferences people can attend and sit in the audience and say nothing and do nothing. Bar camp is an opportunity to engage.

Session Title
I have two sessions prepped:
1) The Changing Realtor – How to stay ahead of the coming changes
The session includes a powerpoint (that it would be nice to have a projector for) about how there is a change coming to how Realtors operate and are paid. It discusses why change is necessary and the options that will present themselves.
2) Hyperlocal Websites – How to win against any competitor on Google. This class was fairly well attended at REBCLA – it covers how to create and use hyperlocal websites to engage local buyers and sellers.

We could probably combine the social media sessions Stacey and I added to this list. Just depends on how many people want to discuss it and how many sessions we need to do to accommodate everyone.

As a national technology speaker in the real estate industry I am intrigued by barcamp, especially its grass roots origins. I am interested in attending both as a participant and perhaps as a facilitator if needed. I can offer many topics from contact management to digital cameras and virtual tours. I am on a fact finding mission to find REAL EXAMPLES OF SOCIAL NETWORKING SUCCESS STORIES for my speaking engagements and for my members website RealEstateTechnologyExperts.com. I would be delighted to facilitate an open discussion along the lines of: Social Networking, The Real Deal for Business or the Worst Distraction Since They Put Solitaire on Computers? I will be speaking at NAR in November and have spoken at hundreds of industry events in the past 14 years. I have my own projector and speakers if needed. I plan on attending all day.

I work in Social Media, and have used it to help buld relationships in the real estate industry, meet buyers, and raise the visibility of homes for sale. I am looking forward to learning and sharing tomoorow. I could facilitate a number of discussions around the above, as well as lead in depth discussion of what social media is, how to build your brand, find your target audience, what SM can and cant do and how to be successful on twitter and linkedin. No projector needed, hapy to help in any way.

Discussion Leader: Kristal Kraft (Just blew in from Denver!)
Session: Using Photos To Make Your Blog Pop!
Description of Session: As a practitioner (and lousy writer) I use pictures to attract clients to my blog. Let’s have a discussion on photo tips and tried and true way to generate relocation traffic to your blog.
I can share the how to and the why but want to hear about the success of others.
Round table discussions rock because we all learn from each other.

Hi Steph from Qwest. I sure wish you’d been around last week when 3 or 4 people from Qwest blew me off. I spent a long time on the phone with Qwest, getting routed from one person to another. Several told me “I’ll call you back” and never did.
So Qwest lost the opportunity to provide wifi to this event (and the fact that you posted here at 4:24pm on the day of the event — that ended at 4:30 — wasn’t much help to be perfectly honest.)
The (complete lack of) service I got from Qwest pretty much ensures I won’t be recommending them to anyone for something like this.
TalkToQwest on Tue, 28th Apr 2009 9:54 am
Hello again,
I am very sorry for the poor experience you had when attempting to use our service for your event, I wish I had gotten to you sooner. I hope in the future if you ever do have a need for Qwest assistance you will keep our email address, and I will do everything I can to assist you in a positive experience.
thank you for your feedback as well
