Hi Jay – At the REBarcamp in Houston, I did a couple of sessions on “Using Real Estate Mkt Stats with your clients.” The session focused on using stats to motivate buyers, help sellers price their homes correctly, and using stats as a way to market yourself on your website. The session seemed to be well-received by the group, as we did two of them, and it’s a reduced form of a more formal workshop we provide to industry professional in various continuing education sessions.

For the BarCamp in SF, Mike and I both had an “Altos Research User Group” session for our current subscribers to see how to max out on their account and to help those interested in learning more see what this “Altos stuff” is all about.

We’ll offer both of these throughout the day, and should be able to accommodate since there’s two of us.

    Thanks!

    -Scott Sambucci

Excellent! Thanks Scott. I know your and Mike’s sessions are BarCampSF were well received.

  4. Ginger on Wed, 17th Dec 2008 12:19 pm

I was going to do a session called “Using the Internet to Make REAL LIFE Connections”. Since Jay is doing that, I think I will do one called “Using the Internet to Make REAL LIFE Connections in SIX minutes”.

  5. Jay Thompson on Wed, 17th Dec 2008 12:38 pm

Ginger – you can still do it. I’ve got no claim to it. Or we could tag team it. Or have two sessions. Whatever, I’m easy! (but not cheap…)

  6. Derek Overbey on Wed, 17th Dec 2008 12:53 pm

I want Jeff Turner @ResPres to do a session called “I take back all those bad things I said about Seesmic because Derek Overbey @doverbey showed me the light!”

But on a serious note, I would love to have a session on integrating video into your Social Media outreach. Really interested in talking about using video sites like TokBox, Stickam, Ustream, Seesmic, Phreadz and Utterli to teach and connect with your audience. Jeff and Mike Price would be great for this and I could share a thought or two.

  7. Rob Hahn on Wed, 17th Dec 2008 1:37 pm

I’ll be looking to run a session called “Top Ten Issues for Real Estate 2.0″ or some such thing. Basically, I don’t want to talk; I want to encourage real discussion, followed with an actual recommendation to the industry to emerge from the collected wisdom of the BarCampers.

Too many of you guys are experts; there’s no more need to hear another “How to Blog” session. You guys need to be contributing to the industry in a real way. I can moderate that. :)

In SF, I hosted a roundtable discussion on Mortgage 2.0. I would like to lead a similar session. At the least, Dan Green and I will be at RE BarCamp. That’s eight years of mortgage blogging experience between just us. Hopefully some other mortgage peeps will be able to make it.

  9. Derek Overbey on Wed, 17th Dec 2008 3:41 pm

You can throw Morgan Brown into that session too. Hell, I would even sit in that one and I’m pretty useless when it comes to Mortgage talk!

  10. Andy Kaufman on Wed, 17th Dec 2008 4:20 pm

    Loving the ideas so far.

The session that I plan on leading is actually a
group game. I’ve played it at a couple of other BarCamps and it’s always a blast. Still tracking down the exact rules, but it’s going to be fun, trust me.

Was also thinking about leading a group exercise along the lines of “Looking into the crystal ball”, where at the end of the session, we’d end up with a list of predictions that we could go back and see how we did a year or two down the road.

I was kicking around discussing google’s website optimizer. I hate being told what’s right or wrong when it’s so much nicer to just find out for yourself. But I’m a practical application kind of gal-geek…

  12. Jay Thompson on Mon, 22nd Dec 2008 12:38 pm

Love it. I’ve recently really just started doing some formal A/B testing. It’s wicked cool, but I’ve got a LOT to learn. I’ll be listening….

It’s even in the outline for my talk at Bloggers Connect the day after Bar Camp. I betcha I can glean a few nuggets to share there (with full attribution, natch.)

    2. How to REALLY Grab ‘em – Internet Marketing Strategies – This is a look at several example websites/blogs using “How’s the Market?” to engage and convert leads/clients.

We’ll be there ready to rock and roll!

  32. Rob Hahn on Tue, 8th Dec 2009 9:25 pm

I’d like to suggest the following tracks:

    The Business Track:

This is the stuff that most REBC’s try to cover for newcomers to the space. Social Media 101, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, using video, etc.

    Technology Track:

I feel that REBC’s have gotten away a bit from the technology side of things. Even if attendance is a bit lower, I’d be interested in seeing more on some actual tech stuff. Data, new web tools, new desktop tools, using PowerPoint, using database tools, etc. Scott/Mike can delve into analyzing market data; I’d love to see something on IT Policies or Network Security, etc.

Then the rest of the sessions can be free-form, back to the chaos that is what makes REBC so cool.

BTW, I’m a big proponent of allowing companies to pitch their products, as long as attendees know that the session is a pitch for a particular company or product.

    -rsh

  33. Gahlord on Wed, 9th Dec 2009 8:31 am

I think having tracks is a big departure from the spirit of barcamps and would not be beneficial. If you have tracks you may as well have a formalized conference.

  34. Patrick Healy on Wed, 9th Dec 2009 12:38 pm

I think that a few tracks are good to keep the subject matter diversified and allow for some folks who normally wouldn’t offer to do a session be pre-seeded. I think the spirit of barcamp is an open exchange of information and experiences and this does not violate that. Is someone plans on doing a session at barcamp I would like to think that they do something to prepare for that session so the sessions are already pretty much predetermined – just not public. If someone wants to make their session be known then I don’t see anything wrong with it.

In terms of pitching as a vendor I am personally not a fan of it however people are free to walk out of any session they like if they don’t like what is said. The only thing that I think the committee needs to watch is the potential for the entire time slot to be roadblocked by people pitching their products as this would effectively kill that slot for anyone that is not interested in hearing a pitch – which, IMHO, is contrary to the spirit of barcamp.

Slotting a few tracks will eliminate this risk.

  35. Kathleen Buckley on Wed, 9th Dec 2009 2:39 pm

Topic I’m interested in: what have people found success with whether it be a particular category of blog post or interaction on facebook or use of video. If you’ve found something that has really clicked, I’m interested in that story.

I’d also be really interested in a demo (call it a sales pitch perhaps) of all the widgets on @WellcomeMat–the *best* site for hyper-local and real estate video in existence.

I believe @RealBird (or postlets or vFlyer) could run a great session about how easily their sites make it to promote listings and then share that content across SM networks and the internet in general. If agents aren’t taking advantage of these free or nearly free services, well then they should be.

From a bigger picture perspective, it might be good to have a session about *communication* because I think that, because technology gets involved, we tend to lose site of the fact that these are really just new tools that we are using to communicate with one another. Might be good to frame some discussion in terms of what are we trying to communicate to the world.

Great job of thinking ahead of time what the possible make-up of the attenders might be and doing some pre-planning on the agenda!

I believe your assessment is correct and I like the two different sets of sessions. I have been involved in a data share with three Associatins over the past two years and it is coming together with the final piece going into place. By Jan 15th, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse will be sharing data on a common MLS program. That is about 10,000 agents and their listings! Pretty cool!

Wish I could make it but I have been at 5 conferences and 3 barcamps last year and it starts all over again for 2010 on Feb. 1st witn NYS Winter meetings in Albany.

I’ll be watching via the livestream!

  54. Rob Hahn on Mon, 21st Dec 2009 10:20 am

The REBC organizers have discussed the attendee list issue, and have made the change as in the post itself: only OPT-IN attendee information will be provided.

When we discussed this in our original planning meeting, none of us ever thought that providing attendee list would be controversial. I’ve sponsored industry events aplenty in a professional capacity, and have always received the attendee list as a benefit of sponsorship. So we never imagined folks would have an issue with it.

No sponsor has asked us for a list of attendees; we proactively offered it out of gratitude to these generous companies, just as a matter of course.

But hey, we heard the feedback, and we’re happy to modify the offering.

We did consider not offering a list at all, but felt it was better to go with an OPT-IN list (even stronger than an OPT-OUT list) because there may be first-timers coming who would actually want to hear from sponsors. They may have never heard of some of the companies and what they offer. So for such people, we’ll give them the option to be included in an attendee list.

So thanks for all the feedback, and we’ll be getting back to work now of actually securing sponsors. :)

Thank you for making the sponsor list an “opt-in” list. I think this is a great solution for those who would like to receive vendor/sponsor data. I’ll officially “opt-out” now. ;)

  57. Todd Carpenter on Mon, 21st Dec 2009 12:34 pm

Actually Rob, I know this might fan the flames but, The above is a promise that you can’t currently make. I own rebarcamp.com the website and have established no privacy policy for a reason.

On occasion, registration lists have been given to RE BarCamp sponsors. This dates back to the very first event in San Francisco and includes last year’s New York event. It was discussed by the original organizers and agreed upon at the time.

I reserve the right to do so again in the future. I also reserve the right to use the list to help people in the industry promote other events. For instance, I gave last year’s rsvp list for New York to your team and I plan to use these lists to promote Real Estate WordCamp.

I reserve the right to use this data however I see fit. If you wish to provide a privacy policy for RE BarCamp registrants, you will need to move the promotional website off of rebarcamp.com.

    Hey Todd -

Oh, I didn’t mean the RSVP list on REBARCAMP.COM, which indeed, you own, and generously provide to people like us to make use of it.

I meant more the registration list that we, LSSMC, will be compiling on the day of the conference. Sorry for not clarifying that.

RSVP List doesn’t necessarily mean Attendee List, since many people who say they’ll attend may not make it. For what it’s worth, I never thought we had the right to do anything with the RSVP list or anything on this website.

    Thanks,

    -rsh
